For the first time in more than five years, the Sheppey Sunday League takes to the field tonight for a representative match as they face the North Kent Sunday League at Sittingbourne’s Bourne Park.
The last time such a game took place was May 2004, when the side travelled to Windsor and beat their Thames Valley counterparts.
Secretary Mark Rogers hopes tonight’s game will mark the start of a more regular fixture programme between leagues.
He said: “It is something we have been looking to re-introduce over the last few seasons but due to time restraints and other issues we have not got round to organising an event like this, so we are more than pleased to welcome our colleagues from the North Kent League for this match.”
The Sheppey side has been selected from teams playing in the higher reaches of the Sunday League, although with at least two more games in the pipeline, players from lower divisions are expected to be given their chance to shine in the coming months.
“We cannot thank our good friends at Sittingbourne FC enough for staging this match along with our sponsors from Dore Metals, Stadium Sports and the Royal Hotel,” said Rogers.
“This match is just another part of the League’s continuing expanding structure that we are actively promoting and we are also at present looking into the feasibility of introducing a new Youth League to the area which we will be making an announcement about very soon.”
Kick-off at Bourne Park is 7.45pm.
