Landlubbers be on your guard as more than 4,000 pirates may set sail to the Isle of Sheppey in a race for glory in August.
Leysdown Pirates want as many fellow buccaneers as possible to join them in an attempt to scupper the world record for the largest ever gathering of swashbucklers on Sunday, August 29.
Town carnival chairman Paul Day says it was a case of ‘blow me down’ after he found out Hasting will try to beat the town to the record – currently set at 1,744.
He said: “We were aiming for 2,010 [pirates] but we found out Hastings are going for 4000 on August 7 so we have had to up our game. We have doubled our distribution of fliers and put an appeal on our facebook page.
“Do you like dressing up? Do you like fireworks and canon fire and do you want to take part in a world record attempt?
“If the answer is yes then please come down and support us. It is going to be a great day and after our attempt to set a new world record for the greatest number of pirates in one place and as the afternoon drifts away and the sun slides below the horizon the pirates will fire their cannons across the beach to trigger a grand fireworks display.”
The 2010 carnvial starts this weekend (Saturday, July 31) with a grand parade featuring the crowned carnival queen and the most glamorous granny.
Paul says there will be something for everyone including a little bit of Eastern culture. He added: “We are very lucky to have the Chinese lion again to start the parade with our invited guests being asked to paint the eyes to bring this ancient animal to life, and then perform its good luck dance.
“There will be many good causes and charity stalls, a funfair with kiddie’s rides and many after parade parties in bars and clubs in the area for people to stay and enjoy.
“This Sunday (August 1) we have a free show case event taking place in the spinney from 11am to 6pm. There is a full programme with dancers, groups, singers and bands performing throughout the day, the show will change every half hour. This is a nonstop show with over 100 performers, almost all from this Island, please come and support them.”
